PENGUIN PURSUES NAKED CHEF INFRINGERS

Today’s Sunday Telegraph reports that a hundred popular recipes by the Naked Chef Jamie Oliver have been compiled into a fake book which has been emailed to millions of people worldwide, to the consternation of Oliver’s publishers Penguin. Oliver’s first four books have sold more than six million copies, earning him more than £6m, but his 30,000 books sales a week may be dented by the fake, The Naked Chef 2, which is a painstaking compilation of his previously published recipes. Penguin suspects the lavishly illustrated email fake has been cobbled together by someone with a grudge against either Oliver or Penguin itself. Says Robert Lands, a media law specialist at Finers Stephens Innocent: “In theory the publishers could sue for damages … The minimum they could ask for is the value of the book multiplied by how many people it was sent to”. But first the villain must be found and that is not so easy, where “spoofing” techniques can be used to camouflage the identity of an email’s sender.
